Our world is in a state of change, often described as ‘VUCA’ to reflect its volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Regardless of how we wish to characterise our world today, the bottom line is that there is turbulence on the world stage within which our universities must operate. This turbulence makes it even more urgent, more critically essential, for universities, for university leaders, to consider their legacy and their institution’s legacy, their voice and their institution’s voice, their ethical choices and their institution’s ethical choices, on how to react, how to respond, to their environment’s challenges. Universities can no longer be audience to the world stage. It is their duty to be centre-stage. It is their duty to contribute actively to the sustainability of their world, their environment. Their legacy, their voice, and their ethical choices define them and the future generations they are tasked with educating.
